Keeping pets cool and comfortable through a Texas summer

Hot pavement, high humidity and long afternoons can be hard on dogs and cats. Simple grooming and routine changes make a big difference.

Texas summers are long, and humidity near the Gulf makes hot days feel even hotter. Dogs and cats cannot sweat the way people do, so they rely on panting, shade and you. These habits help pets stay comfortable from May through September.

Plan walks around the heat

Walk dogs early in the morning or after sunset. Before heading out, press the back of your hand on the pavement for seven seconds. If it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for paws. Bring water on every walk and stop in the shade often.

Groom for airflow

Loose undercoat traps heat close to the skin. Regular brushing with a dematting and deshedding comb clears it away and keeps air moving through the coat. Do not shave double-coated breeds unless your vet recommends it, because the coat also protects against sunburn.

For pets who dislike brushes, grooming gloves feel like petting and still lift loose fur.

Keep eyes and ears clean

Swimming, sprinklers and humid air can leave ears damp. Wipe the outer ear with finger wipes after water play. Dust and pollen can also cause tear staining, which eye wipes help clear. Never put anything deep into the ear canal.

Indoor play on scorching days

When it is too hot outside, keep energy levels in check indoors. A laser toy works well for cats, and puzzle feeders help dogs. Always end laser play on a toy your pet can catch.

Know the warning signs

Heavy panting, drooling, bright red gums, weakness or vomiting can signal heatstroke. Move your pet somewhere cool, offer water and call your veterinarian right away. And never leave a pet in a parked car, even for a few minutes.
